Package: fileutils
Version: 4.1-1
Severity: wishlist
GNU fileutils do not recognize ACL entries properly:
- ls does not display a "+" if an ACL is present.
- mv and cp do not copy the ACL when -p is used.
The author of the POSIX ACL code provides patches to change this at
http://acl.bestbits.at/
Rationale:
With samba 2.2.0 supporting POSIX ACL on Linux people will want to use
this feature and Debian should be prepared to do so.
If you feel that this is too experimental, i am willing to maintain
an experimental package.

AFAIK, there are at least two differing implementations of POSIX ACL's
on Linux. I think it's silly to try to support ACL's until there is a
consensus implementation, and I definately won't support a debian
version of fileutils that is so fundamentally different from the
upstream version.

No, there is just one. All other attempts are disfunctional (LIDS does
not count here). FYI: The implementation at acl.bestbits.at is the
consensus implementation and will be used in future releases of XFS
as well. There is also an alpha-quality patch for EXT3 to support this.
This implementation is also compatible to TrustedBSD and Irix with
close cooperation between all relevant parties.
As for being fundamentally different from upstream: They are not! In fact
they fix a very serious bug in the upstream release.

When its fully implemented and transitioned I'm sure it will be accepted.

Convince upstream to fix it then.

When its fully implemented and transitioned I'm sure it will be accepted.

Convince upstream to fix it then.

I was encouraged at irc.debian.org (#debian) to re-request this feature
for fileutils (respectively its partner-package "coreutils" which
already has replaced fileutils in the current testing tree Sarge).
The original poster's description of the behaviour of Debian's ls, mv
and cp remains unchanged until now.
http://acl.bestbits.at/ offers patches for current stable kernels,
filesystems EXT2/EXT3. JFS and XFS both seem to use this approach too in
order to provide ACL-functionality.
Furthermore, Linux 2.5 includes the EXT2/EXT3-patches by default
already.
The homepage states that work on the coreutils-patch is currently in
alpha state, nevertheless - requesting updated information on this - its
maintainer Andreas Gruenbacher reports the ACL patch to be quite stable
already (as very little changed from fileutils to coreutils). Inclusion
of ACL-functionality upstream will be requested by A. Gruenbacher.
(For details check his posting at
http://acl.bestbits.at/pipermail/acl-devel/2003-April/001406.html .)
Until then, the patches would have to be applied in order for Debian to
provide ACL-functionality.
Cheers
Markus A.

Subject: fileutils: fileutils should include the ACL patch from acl.bestbits.at
To: submit@bugs.debian.org
X-Mailer: bug 3.3.9
Delivered-To: submit@bugs.debian.org
