I just upgraded from 0.9.5.1-4 to 1.0.1-2, and noticed that the volume
control (the slider in the window) doesn't do anything. I can set it to
any volume (the display shows the "volume: xx%" text), but nothing is
changed.
Note: this is on Alpha. If this works OK on i386, please let me know so
I can look into it (perhaps the autobuilder screwed up somehow).
Thanks,

I've done some more investigation.
I've found that it is now necessary to configure the OSS driver to
use the master volume, and not the PCM volume.
Note that I use a Gravis Ultrasound:
$ cat /dev/sndstat
OSS/Free:3.8s2++-971130
Load type: Driver loaded as a module
Kernel: Linux alf 2.2.15pre9 #1 Thu Feb 24 20:15:58 CET 2000 alpha
Config options: 0
Installed drivers:
Card config:
Audio devices:
0: Ultrasound
Synth devices:
0: Gravis UltraSound 3.7 (512k)
Midi devices:
0: Gravis UltraSound Midi
Timers:
0: System clock
Mixers:
0: ICS2101 Multimedia Mixer
I've also checked to see what aumix uses (aumix works perfectly):
aumix uses SOUND_MIXER_READ_SYNTH and SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_SYNTH;
xmms uses SOUND_MIXER_READ_PCM and SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_PCM. Apparently
the Gravis doesn't have the "PCM" control, only the "SYNTH", which
is why xmms doesn't work in the default setting.
xmms should probably check the capabilities of the mixer, and then use the
appropriate control.

I've also checked to see what aumix uses (aumix works perfectly):
aumix uses SOUND_MIXER_READ_SYNTH and SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_SYNTH;
xmms uses SOUND_MIXER_READ_PCM and SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_PCM. Apparently
the Gravis doesn't have the "PCM" control, only the "SYNTH", which
is why xmms doesn't work in the default setting.
xmms should probably check the capabilities of the mixer, and then use the
appropriate control.

From what I can tell reading Output/OSS/mixer.c in XMMS 1.2.3 source, this
still hasn't been done. Can anyone please tell me if this is too problematic
to be implemented or something?

Subject: xmms has been removed from Debian, closing #59235
X-CrossAssassin-Score: 45
Version: 1:1.2.10+20070601-1+rm
The xmms package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
against it.
For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/461309 . That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.
Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.
Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
