While I agree that those defaults aren't good I must also say that
there isn't a common command to use for a postscript-viewer, so all I
can do is adding a Suggests: on such a viewer and making note of this
in README.Debian.
The "lp" call, however, can be fixed to refer to "lpr" instead, also
adding a Suggests:.
As thus this bug is partially fixed as of the upcoming html2ps_1.0b4-3
I downgrade the severity to minor.
Cheers,
Flo

While I agree that those defaults aren't good I must also say that
there isn't a common command to use for a postscript-viewer, so all I
can do is adding a Suggests: on such a viewer and making note of this
in README.Debian.
The "lp" call, however, can be fixed to refer to "lpr" instead, also
adding a Suggests:.
As thus this bug is partially fixed as of the upcoming html2ps_1.0b4-3
I downgrade the severity to minor.
Cheers,

Well, with the current status the probability that it works on a Debian
system is close to 0. Just changing "ghostscript" to "gv" would raise
the success rate by an enormous amount :-)
I think the solution involves two steps, the first one being easy and
the second one less easy:
1) html2ps should suggest postscript-viewer
2) as an interim solution, the installation script for html2ps could
search for a package providing postscript-viewer and configure
html2ps to use that one; suboptimal, but much better than the current
behaviour. As a definitive solution, packages providing
postscript-viewer should manage an alias in
/usr/bin/postscript-viewer using the alternatives mechanism.

True, but unfortunately too specific as this would require a Suggests:
on gv, thus possibly "forcing" a certain, but unneeded package on the
users...

Already done in 1.0b4-3, also adding a README.Debian explaining the
problem.

While this is certainly possible it'd open a new bag of fleas by
adding quite some complexity. What would happen if the user installs
another postscript-viewer and uninstalls the previous one, i.e. how
could the package now determine which viewer to use?
So we'd need to search a suitable viewer on each invocation...?
BTW, just to make sure: this problem only applies to xhtml2ps, the
contributed tcl frontend to html2ps which hasn't been updated for
quite some time. html2ps itself isn't affected.

Unlikely as there doesn't seem to be a common interface these viewers
provide, like e.g. command line args, so they are not quite fit for the
alternatives mechanism.
So I'd conclude that even better than this it'd be if it were possible
to specify a postscript-viewer for xhtml2ps to use during runtime via
a command line argument, a specific field in the frontend and / or
a config file. Incidentally, this is also what I mention in the
README.Debian mentioned above.
However, I don't think there are that many people that actually make
use of xhtml2ps (only 2 out of 55 bugreports refer to it), and this
problem only affects one certain feature of the program that could
easily be avoided, so all in all the goal we could achieve is pretty
small compared to the effort that might be necessary, thus lowering
the priority I personally assign this issue by quite some amount...
Personally, I'd even prefer to drop xhtml2ps altogether thus getting
rid of the dependany on tk8.3 and tcl8.3, but won't do so now.
Of course, this shouldn't stop anyone from providing a proper patch.
Cheers,
Flo
