It takes a long time just to do "mailq", too. From strace it appears that exim is trying to do a DNS look-up of my unqualified hostname, which takes a while to time out when I have no Internet connection. When I do have an Internet connection, exim runs quickly as expected. I don't think the solution is to adjust my DNS: exim shouldn't be trying to look up my hostname as if it were a top-level domain when we all know it isn't. So, exim should be looking up "machine.localdomain.org" instead of just "machine". So, it might be a bug. On the other hand, perhaps some kind person can tell me how to configure exim so that it qualifies the name or prove to me that the problem is unsolvable because of fundamental UNIX design errors.
