Package: exim
Version: 3.22-4
Severity: normal
Since I upgraded to 3.22-4 exim takes a very long time to start up. It
takes a long time just to do "mailq", too.
From strace it appears that exim is trying to do a DNS look-up of my
unqualified hostname, which takes a while to time out when I have no
Internet connection. When I do have an Internet connection, exim runs
quickly as expected.
I don't think the solution is to adjust my DNS: exim shouldn't be
trying to look up my hostname as if it were a top-level domain when we
all know it isn't.
So, exim should be looking up "machine.localdomain.org" instead of
just "machine".
So, it might be a bug.
On the other hand, perhaps some kind person can tell me how to
configure exim so that it qualifies the name or prove to me that the
problem is unsolvable because of fundamental UNIX design errors.

Hi,
I am confronted with the same problem even with the newest version from
woody. The long startup time seems to have to deal with the DNS lookup
from exim, but it only appears when a default route is set. If I remove
the default route everything just works fine. Some other programms like
telnet do have the same problem, others like ping and mozilla not.
My DNS setup must be ok then. By the way:
nihil:~# hostname -f
nihil.tappe.netz
As requested from the person who reported the Bug fist, but didn't
reply.

As you convinced me that everything is as it should be I checked again
the proper solution Philip Hazal and I worked out, but which did not
work at that time for some strange reason we could not find.
And this way I found out that the problem has disappeared in the
current version of exim!!!
So, anyone who is annoyed by this DNS lookup of exim can simply set the
following option and it should work fine without looking up the name of
the localhost all the time (it does here):
# This specifies the name of the current host. This is used in the HELO
# command for outgoing SMTP messages, and as the default for
# qualify_domain.
# If it is not set, Exim calls uname() to find it. If this fails, Exim
# panics and dies. If the name returned by uname() contains only one
# component, Exim passes it to gethostbyname() in order to obtain the
# fully qualified version.
primary_hostname = MyMachineName
I suggest that Mark Baker considers to integrate this in the
default exim.conf file. Then he could close the bug #96633 as well.
Thanks for your help Ben.
I am happy that this beast is finally done! :-)

Subject: exim has been removed from Debian, closing #96633
Date: Wed, 16 Apr 2008 17:40:44 -0400
Message-Id: <1208382044.075938.16336.nullmailer@comcast.net>
Version: 3.36-18.2+rm
The exim package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
against it.
For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/420191 . That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.
Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.
Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
