Severity: normal
Version: 2.0.7-4
Synopsis: options noauto and user cause an error message
Class: sw-bug
Distribution: Debian testing/unstable
System: Linux 2.4.0 i686 unknown
Description:
i want to include the information for a windows share in my fstab file,
but i don't want to mount it automatically. for other filesystem types
this works with the option 'noauto'.
furthermore i would like to be able to mount the share as non-root. for
other filsystem types this works with the option 'user'.
both options cause an error message:
------------------------------------------
/etc/fstab:
//r2d2/labor /mnt/r2d2 smbfs rw,noauto,username=kilian
error message:
smbfs: Unrecognized mount option noauto
actually, i just found out, that the error message does only
appear on the console, not in a x-terminal. the mounting
succeeds, anyway.

hi,
I experience the same problem but i must add that even if the mount
succeeds, smbfs options are discarded.
Here are some output from the mount command (with debug level 4) in 5
different fstab scenario which show clearly the problem and explain the
error message in the log. In each scenario a share is mounted with
codepage cp850 that allow me to verify if this smbfs specific option is
interpreted or not.
1. root mount with option debug=4 : mount options and smbfs options
are correctly interpreted
2. root mount with options defaults,debug=4 : mount options and smbfs
options are correctly interpreted
3. root mount with options user,debug=4 : mount options are correctly
interpreted but smbfs options are ignored
4. user renard mount with options user,debug=4 : mount options are
correctly interpreted but smbfs options are ignored
5. root mount with options noauto,debug=4 : mount options are

1. debug, iocharset and codepage options are correctly interpreted (é

Conclusion :
It seems that the options from fstab are correctly interpreted but are
sometimes (when using user and/or noauto options) passed to smbmount
(passthrough) which do not understand them and then ignore them.
Hope that this will help,
reno.

hi,
I experience the same problem but i must add that even if the mount
succeeds, smbfs options are discarded.
5. root mount with options noauto,debug=4 : mount options are
correctly interpreted but smbfs options are ignored
1. debug, iocharset and codepage options are correctly interpreted (é
character is shown):

(/var/log/kern.log)
Nov 1 21:32:16 muscotte kernel: smbfs: Unrecognized mount option noauto
Conclusion :
It seems that the options from fstab are correctly interpreted but are
sometimes (when using user and/or noauto options) passed to smbmount
(passthrough) which do not understand them and then ignore them.
Hope that this will help,
reno.

Package: smbfs
Severity: normal
Version: 2.0.7-4
Synopsis: options noauto and user cause an error message
Class: sw-bug
Distribution: Debian testing/unstable
System: Linux 2.4.0 i686 unknown
Description:
i want to include the information for a windows share in my fstab file,
but i don't want to mount it automatically. for other filesystem types
this works with the option 'noauto'.
furthermore i would like to be able to mount the share as non-root. for
other filsystem types this works with the option 'user'.
both options cause an error message:
------------------------------------------
/etc/fstab:
//r2d2/labor /mnt/r2d2 smbfs rw,noauto,username=kilian
error message:
smbfs: Unrecognized mount option noauto
actually, i just found out, that the error message does only
appear on the console, not in a x-terminal. the mounting
succeeds, anyway.

Right; the fundamental problem here is that smbfs tries to support two
completely different security models for who's allowed to mount what, and
they occasionally step on each other.
If there is an fstab entry for the mount, then yes, users should be allowed
to mount over mountpoints that are owned by root.
If there is no fstab entry for the mount (i.e., the user calls smbmount
instead of mount and smbmnt is suid), then users should only be allowed to
mount over mountpoints that they own.
This bug has gone unfixed because the code needs some rather deep
reorganization to do the right thing. Eric, the patch you submitted isn't
sufficient because it introduces a security hole in the smbmount use case.
The bug may never actually get fixed in smbfs; odds are better that this
will be dealt with in cifs instead.
Cheers,
