Package: debconf
Version: 0.2.80.17
Severity: normal
Hi,
I invoked dpkg-reconfigure from an xterm window like this,
TERM=xterm-r6 dpkg-reconfigure debconf
and up pops the screen dialog in living color. But xterm-r6 has
no color definitions in its terminfo entry (you can verify this
with infocmp or run dselect or capt with TERM=xterm-r6 and there
are no colors). This is the first problem.
The second problem is the colors that debconf actually uses in the
screen dialog. My xterm has its default foreground/background
colors set to black/rgb:c0/c0/c0, ie, black on an amorphous gray
background.
What happens is that debconf displays the descriptive text field
using black/off-white colors, rather than on the expected (by me
anyway) black/rgb:c0/c0/c0 colors. I think that debconf should be
honoring the default colors that were originally choosen by the
user when the xterm was started.
Thanks,

The answer is "d. Dialog". I mentioned this in the Subject, I

Then this bug belongs to dialog or whiptail. Probably the latter.

X-Mailer: bug 3.3.7
Message-Id: <20010216005107.3690815D50@eden-hda7.my.local>

Delivered-To: submit@bugs.debian.org
Package: debconf
Version: 0.2.80.17
Severity: normal
Hi,
I invoked dpkg-reconfigure from an xterm window like this,
TERM=xterm-r6 dpkg-reconfigure debconf
and up pops the screen dialog in living color.
Thanks,
--

I'm closing this bug.
Its caused by debconf using whiptail, which does not honor
the TERM variable fully, or honor xterms colors. This is
because whiptail does not use ncurses by design, to be lightweight,
so this support is not going to be added.
debconf may in the future use dialog if it is present, falling
back to whiptail. This would enable these features.

Alastair

I won't do that because it would make the UI change without warning.
However, you can set DEBCONF_FORCE_DIALOG=3D1 and it will use dialog if
it's present, falling back to whiptail. You need debconf 1.3.3 for this.
(I disagree that real bugs in whiptail should be closed just because it
doesn't use ncurses though.)

Then please re-open this bug and re-assign it to debconf, as I do
have both whiptail and dialog installed.

It is unlikely to be fixed, as its a deep architectural problem

Hi,
the etch-ignore tag is *only* for ignoring otherwise release critical
bugs, and may be set only by the release team.
Cheers,
Andi
