Package: console-tools
Version: 1:0.2.3-14
Severity: wishlist
... as it tries to use several files that could be something else than
fonts, like default.gz
Looking for fonts in the current directory is ok when the filename is
actually specified on the command line by the user; looking for
>20 files first in the current directory and then in a bunch of others
when the user does "consolechars -d" (or a program does that on users'
behalf - cmatrix does that) is kinda bad.
Instead it should be kludged to use the default font in
/etc/console-tools/config (then that config file could have a fixed
path to prevent things from getting "mixed up";)

Did you really check what kbd does ?
if (!*ifil) {
/* try to find some default file */
if (iunit < 0 || iunit > 32)
iunit = 0;
if (iunit == 0) {
if ((fpi = findfont(ifil = "default")) == NULL &&
(fpi = findfont(ifil = "default8x16")) == NULL &&
(fpi = findfont(ifil = "default8x14")) == NULL &&
(fpi = findfont(ifil = "default8x8")) == NULL) {
fprintf(stderr, _("Cannot find default font\n"));
exit(1);
}
} else {
sprintf(defname, "default8x%d", iunit);
if ((fpi = findfont(ifil = defname)) == NULL &&
(fpi = findfont(ifil = "default")) == NULL) {
fprintf(stderr, _("Cannot find %s font\n"), ifil);
exit(1);
}
}
Which makes it look into:
char *fontdirpath[] = { "", DATADIR "/" FONTDIR "/", 0 };
While console-tools does:
if (requested_height == 0)
{
if ((fpi = findfont("default", pathname, sizeof(pathname), NULL, &font_magic)) == NULL &&
(fpi = findfont("default8x16", pathname, sizeof(pathname), NULL, &font_magic)) == NULL &&

(fpi = findfont("default8x08", pathname, sizeof(pathname), NULL, &font_magic)) == NULL)
{

{
fprintf(stderr, _("Cannot find default font file `default8x%02d'.\n"), requested_height);

With:
static const char *fontdirpath[] = { "", DATADIR "/" FONTDIR "/",

LOCALDATADIR "/" FONTDIR "/",

... which you won't find to be *so* different
> Instead it should be kludged to use the default font in

No. That is maybe an insufficient documentation, but "default font"
refers to "something like" the default font at kernel bootup time.
Except that the kernel does not provide any means to restore it, so we
look for files that should contain a font sufficiently close to this.
And yes, it is *really* badly done for non-i386 archs, but this is a
known problem.
Anyway /etc/console-tools is Debian-specific. To do what you need, please call:
/etc/init.d/console-screen.sh

Except that the kernel does not provide any means to restore it, so we
look for files that should contain a font sufficiently close to this.
And yes, it is *really* badly done for non-i386 archs, but this is a
known problem.
Anyway /etc/console-tools is Debian-specific. To do what you need, please call:
/etc/init.d/console-screen.sh

kbd's config scripts copy (at least used to back in '97) the user's
default font to default.gz - therefore the user gets the "proper" default
font whenever he calls setfont/consolechars to reset the font to the
default (or a program calls it on his behalf).

Hmm maybe reassign this bug to _all_ the packages that call
consolechars/setfont then? ;)

Well forgot to do that this time but still the contents of the "default"
font have changed from the kbd times - from config-script-generated to
distro-provided.

Well if we wanted to implement a kludge to skip cwd for -d, it would be
quite easy to implement - assuming you can add parameters to findfont()
without breaking other apps - add a flag to findfont specifying whether
you want the current directory to be searched or not and turn that flag
off when searching for the default font.
(Or maybe reverse the directory search order for -d?;)
As another related thing: if a user happens to be editing fonts and has
say... crap, crap.txt, crap.c, crap.psf and default8x16.psf.gz.psf.bz2
in the current directory and then tries to:
consolechars -fcrap
consolechars -fdefault8x16.psf.gz
consolechars -f./lat1u-16
The first two will load "crap" and "default8x16.psf.gz.psf.bz2" from
current directory; the user may have expected for it to load crap.psf and
/usr/share/consolefonts/default8x16.psf.gz
And the third one will load /usr/share/consolefonts/./lat1u-16.psf.gz -
which may suprise the user even more ;)
But maybe I should shut up...
Or mention the reason for the existence of such UI bugs - which is
everyone reimplementing the wheel (path searching this time).

Yes, but the "user's default font" is not a concept from the kbd
upstream package (nor from console-tools, at least not yet). It is
Debian-specific. OTOH, the kernel's idea of the default font is
(well, not exactly, as explained, but you see what I mean).

Hm, with -d only, you mean ;) Please submit bugs on them, I was not
hit by one, or didn't notice.

Well, I don't think that "setfont -d" ever refered to the
config-script-generated default, and console-tools still has this
config-script-generated default. I *really* don't think anything
significant changed here on console-tools side. Do you have examples
of things that worked at that time the way you describe ?

findfont() in lct is merely a trivial wrapper around findfile(). Just
a new wrapper could do the trick. It looks justified - reopening.

This is a documentation problem in both kbd and lct. Maybe we should
consider changing the behaviour not to look in pwd first. That should
be thought of. You may want to open a wishlist item on this.

thanks
console-tools is dead upstream, so I am replacing it with kbd as soon as
practicable -
which now means post-etch. These bugs do not impact users significantly,
so they
will not get fixed.
Sorry,
