Since it's in our policy to have this compression I completely agree perldoc should support compressed .pod files. By the way, the mentioned bug report is #53920. See Policy §13.5 on "Preferred documentation formats". While I agree that it would be nice if perldoc could cope with compressed .pod files, I think that this is a wishlist item.
