Hi,
I got a bug report for libxml-perl complaining that perldoc didn't support
one of the documentation files which was large enough to get compressed.
Since it's in our policy to have this compression I completely agree
perldoc should support compressed .pod files. By the way, the mentioned
bug report is #53920. If you want I can reassign that one to perl-doc
and merged it with this one.
Thanks,
Ardo

Given that perldoc doesn't search /usr/share/doc/ by default,
it would seem a bit dubious to place them there as POD.
I don't see that POD in this context differs substantially from SGML or
any other form of marked up text--perhaps you should be installing pages
formatted with pod2html and/or pod2text? See Policy §13.5 on "Preferred
documentation formats".
While I agree that it would be nice if perldoc could cope with
compressed .pod files, I think that this is a wishlist item.

Ok, I agree. I was more thinking along the line of using it as
perldoc -f /usr/share/doc//foobar.pod.gz
I don't expect perldoc to actively search package's doc directories.
You're completely right about using pod2x. I'll use that to solve my bug.
