Package: gnus
Version: 5.8.3-9
Severity: normal
The gnus package installs two copies of the manual, one with filenames
gnus-*, and one gnus-e20-*. The latter is out-of-date and should not
be installed, and sadly, it seems to get first in the menu list and thus
makes it hard to find the real manual.

If you look at the files included in the package, you shall
see that this happens not to be the case. Gnus only includes one set
of infofiles; the -e20- set belongs to emacs20; and documents the
Gnus bundled in with Emacs. Since emacs20 is installed before gnus,
it gets the higher listing.
Ideally, the standalone Gnus Package documentation should over
ride the built in Gnus' docs, but I do not see a clean way of doing
this.
What would you suggest?

Yeah, sorry for the misstatement.
Well, the obvious solution is to use /etc/alternatives for the
top-level index of the manual, and then have only one entry in the
directory. (You don't need to alternatives-ify everything.)
Another would be to to separate out the gnus that's in emacs itself
into a separate package which would conflict; Mark Eichin might be
perfectly happy with that.

Hi,
The info document issue is not merely gnus related; it shall
also affect any standalone package that is also incorporated into
Emacs, and, indeed, affect things when multiple emacsen are
installed. We need a policy for this, perhaps involving a versioned
info subdir per emacs flavour, and massive use of alternatives.
74463 is labeled a wishlist since this is not a feature that
has ever been supprted by Gnus; but it is now supported in an as yet
unreleased version version of gnus (and that shall fix 74434 as
well).

Hi,
The info document issue is not merely gnus related; it shall
also affect any standalone package that is also incorporated into
Emacs, and, indeed, affect things when multiple emacsen are
installed. We need a policy for this, perhaps involving a versioned
info subdir per emacs flavour, and massive use of alternatives.
74463 is labeled a wishlist since this is not a feature that
has ever been supprted by Gnus; but it is now supported in an as yet
unreleased version version of gnus (and that shall fix 74434 as
well).
