Package: apt
Version: 0.5.4
Severity: wishlist
based on closure of my normal bug 121051, the preferences file does not
handle package wildcards gracefully, but takes only explicit package
names or the acrosss-the-board wildcard, *.
it would be extremely convenient for apt to handle relative wildcards,
like package.prefix* or *package.string*, in the preferences file.
if unchanged, apt preferences docs should state package wildcards are
handled differently from version wildcards. currently, man apt_preferences
says, "selection by version can be done by exact match or prefix match."

Now, almost 2 Years later, this one hasn't been closed, not even got a
comment, but it's still needed. Instead of pinning e.g. qt3* and
libqt3*, I have to write a rule for each package, at least to keep
apt-get quiet.
Why isn't it possible having package-wild-cards working?

apt is an open source project, and this is a feature request. If you need
this feature, you can start working on implementing it. If you can't or
won't, then you need to wait for someone else to want it, who can and will.
This is not a gratis custom software development service.

apt is an open source project, and this is a feature request. If you need
this feature, you can start working on implementing it. If you can't or
won't, then you need to wait for someone else to want it, who can and will.
This is not a gratis custom software development service.

I know, sorry if did sound rude, didn't mean it that way, I just made a
simple question.
I mean, there are two uncommented requests for the same feature for a
simple to solve sounding problem. So, isn't it simple or would it be a
performance problem than?

It may be simple; it may not. I haven't even looked. If you find that it
is trivial, I don't think there is any harm in it, and I would welcome a
patch.

It's actually possible to list several packages separated by whitespace in =

same Package: field. It's not wildcarding, but at least one doesn't have to=
=20
add a complete rule for every package.
