AIUI your issue is with 'ls' depending _at run time_ on libncurses.so
(very reasonable!) what do you think of linking in ncurses' termcap
emulation staticly?
The emulation is quite small, allows you to follow the terminal type
and not add ncurses to the dynamic libs you need at run time.
