That was my initial reaction as well but if you execute /bin/ls by
itself with the same parameters, this is what you get:
$ /bin/ls /etc/hostname/.
/bin/ls: /etc/hostname/.: Not a directory
$
But this is a really minor bug, especially in light of the fact that
proftpd is also in potato and doesn't have this problem. That was my
solution.

It can't be the internal wu-ftpd ls, because Debian wu-ftpd isn't compiled
with it. The /bin/ls command, or the one in ~ftp/bin/ls if using anonymous,
is the one that's emitting that message. Try moving it away and logging into
the FTP server, and you'll see that it doesn't work.
Perhaps the command line parameters that wu-ftpd passes to ls make it act
strangely? Even so, I don't understand why should it ever act like that.

Perhaps the command line parameters that wu-ftpd passes to ls make it act
strangely? Even so, I don't understand why should it ever act like that.

The problem is that wu-ftpd "fixes" the path, removing the trailing "/."
I'm not sure whether this is a bug of wu-ftpd, or ange-ftp though. In the
description of pathnames in RFC959, it does say:
FTP does not yet specify a standard pathname convention. Each user must follow
the file naming conventions of the file systems involved in the transfer.
Depending on how that is interpreted, this could be ange-ftp's bug.
I will contact upstream on this matter..
