In section 3.1: Although labels can contain any 8 bit values in octets that make up a label, it is strongly recommended that labels follow the preferred syntax described elsewhere in this memo, which is compatible with existing host naming conventions. This is from RFC 1123 (Requirements for Internet Hosts -- Application and Support), section 2.1: The syntax of a legal Internet host name was specified in RFC-952 [DNS:4]. One aspect of host name syntax is hereby changed: the restriction on the first character is relaxed to allow either a letter or a digit. You are right. I, as Matt, also thought hostnames that start with a digit where discouraged. As an example of the change of status, ISC BIND does not complain about host names that start with a digit. The good news is that this bug has been fixed in the 3.x versions of the ISC DHCP server (I just tested.) These versions are packaged in the dhcp3-* Debian packages. The bad news is that we don't plan to backport the fix to the 2.x versions of the ISC DHCP server (the dhcp Debian package) since we are focusing on the 3.x branch now and plan to replace the dhcp with its dhcp3 counterpart sometime soon.
