Package: dhcp
Version: 2.0pl4-2
Severity: normal
dhcp chokes on a fixed-address directive whose host name starts with
a number:
/etc/dhcpd.conf line 372: expecting numeric value.
fixed-address 8.belt.
^
Most everything after this point fails, too. That entry in the config
file reads
host 8.belt.lp.mia {
hardware ethernet 00:80:a3:14:53:4b;
fixed-address 8.belt.lp.mia;
}
in full. If I replaced the fixed-address part with "x8.belt.lp.mia"
(a CNAME I created as a workaround) everything is okay.

Can you show me where it says that? From what I can see it recommends
that names be made that way, but explicitly states that they can use any
8 bit values at all. In section 3.1:
Although labels can contain any 8 bit values in octets that make up
a label, it is strongly recommended that labels follow the preferred
syntax described elsewhere in this memo, which is compatible with
existing host naming conventions.
Names which don't follow the old convention are in common use (3com.com,
eg).

Names which don't follow the old convention are in common use (3com.com,
eg).

Here's a more conclusive reference. This is from RFC 1123 (Requirements
for Internet Hosts -- Application and Support), section 2.1:
The syntax of a legal Internet host name was specified in RFC-952
[DNS:4]. One aspect of host name syntax is hereby changed: the
restriction on the first character is relaxed to allow either a
letter or a digit. Host software MUST support this more liberal
syntax.

You are right. I, as Matt, also thought hostnames that start with a

The good news is that this bug has been fixed in the 3.x versions of

The bad news is that we don't plan to backport the fix to the 2.x
versions of the ISC DHCP server (the dhcp Debian package) since we are
focusing on the 3.x branch now and plan to replace the dhcp with its
dhcp3 counterpart sometime soon.
So, if you really want to use hostnames with a digit as the first
character of the hostname, then you must upgrade to the dhcp3-server
package.

the ISC DHCP server (I just tested.) These versions are packaged in the
dhcp3-* Debian packages.
The bad news is that we don't plan to backport the fix to the 2.x
versions of the ISC DHCP server (the dhcp Debian package) since we are
focusing on the 3.x branch now and plan to replace the dhcp with its
dhcp3 counterpart sometime soon.
So, if you really want to use hostnames with a digit as the first
character of the hostname, then you must upgrade to the dhcp3-server
package.
Cheers,
Eloy.-
