procmail is unable to acquire kernel locks, and blocks indefinitely when I
change the file to deliver. For instance, consider doing a simple
`cat | procmail' in these two situations:
1/ procmailrc contains just VERBOSE=3Don
The output is:
,----
| procmail: [1666] Wed Jul 12 18:48:10 2000
| procmail: Locking "/var/spool/mail/didier.lock"
| procmail: Assigning "LASTFOLDER=3D/var/spool/mail/didier"
| procmail: Opening "/var/spool/mail/didier"
| procmail: Acquiring kernel-lock
| procmail: Unlocking "/var/spool/mail/didier.lock"
| From didier@epita.fr Wed Jul 12 18:33:11 2000
| Subject: test
| Folder: /var/spool/mail/didier 1=

`-----
2/ Now, I add "DEFAULT=3D.mbox" in procmailrc
The output is:
,----
| procmail: [1690] Wed Jul 12 18:53:25 2000
| procmail: Locking ".mbox.lock"
| procmail: Assigning "LASTFOLDER=3D.mbox"
| procmail: Opening ".mbox"
| procmail: Acquiring kernel-lock
`-----
and here, procmail is blocked. After Control-C:
,----
| procmail: [1692] Wed Jul 12 18:53:50 2000
| procmail: Terminating prematurely whilst waiting for a kernel-lock
| From didier@epita.fr Wed Jul 12 18:33:11 2000
| Subject: test
| Folder: **Bounced** =
0
| procmail: Unlocking ".mbox.lock"
`-----
I seem to remember that some months ago, I used to get "kernel-lock
failed" messages in the same conffiguration, but that was not causing a
hangup.
Thanks for ideas.

I can't reproduce this on my system, which is a pure potato system running
Linux 2.2.15 + procmail_3.15-0.0.pre.
I would suggest a kernel upgrade.

That may well be the problem - file locking doesn't work over NFS on
Linux.

I think this bug may be related to a known kernel bug regarding suid
binaries, so it's very unlikely that you need a special option for that.
I think that the current procmail snapshot has a workaround for this
bug, if you can wait a day or two without upgrading the kernel, we can
test Linux 2.2.14 + new procmail to see whether it fixes the problem
or not.

If you have problems with NFS I would recommend using Maildir folders
and procmail from woody, which is known not to need any locking at all
when delivering to Maildir folders.

Hi Santiago,
Sorry for the late reply. After doing the same test as in my first report, =
it
appears that procmail doesn't block anymore. BTW, it still says "Kernel-Lock
failed", but it is not blocked.
I guess that closes this bug report thread.
Thanks!

Hi Santiago,
Sorry for the late reply. After doing the same test as in my first report, =
it
appears that procmail doesn't block anymore. BTW, it still says "Kernel-Lock
failed", but it is not blocked.
I guess that closes this bug report thread.
Thanks!

retitle 67127 procmail is unable to create mail spool file under NFS.

I have made some tests with procmail and NFS, and it seems that
procmail is unable to create a mail spool file if the spool directory
is mounted via NFS.
In my test system procmail is compiled to deliver to /var/spool/mail/.
/var/spool/mail is a symlink to /var/mail, and /var/mail is NFS
mounted from /varmail. The command
cat message | procmail
fails with this error
procmail: Couldn't create "/var/spool/mail/bluser"
if /varmail/bluser does not exist, but it succeeds if /varmail/bluser
already exists. In the first case I found the following in the log file:
procmail: [4900] Sat Jan 13 17:14:23 2001
procmail: Locking "/var/spool/mail/bluser.lock"
procmail: Error while writing to "/var/spool/mail/_kMB+e7HY6.jump"
procmail: Lock failure on "/var/spool/mail/bluser.lock"
procmail: Assigning "LASTFOLDER=/var/spool/mail/bluser"
procmail: Opening "/var/spool/mail/bluser"
procmail: Error while writing to "/var/spool/mail/bluser"

procmail: Notified comsat: "bluser@:**Bounced**"
Perhaps this is related to Bug#46598, "procmail wants to create
/var/spool/mail/* files"?
Is this a bug in procmail or it is maybe a limitation of NFS?
[ I can understand procmail having difficulties to use its root
privileges to create files in the spool directory, because NFS
translates root into nobody, but it could yet use its set-gid mail
privileges for this, since the spool directory is group-writable by
group mail ].
Thanks.

When procmail was compiled for the various binaries involved in the bug
report, was it given a set of LOCKINGTEST directories that included an
NFS mounted one, or was LOCKINGTEST set to a value *known* to be safe
with NFS mounted files?

It was set to LOCKINGTEST=100 so that it uses a combination of fcntl()
and dot locking (which, under Linux, is supposed to be the right thing).
