I think this bug may be related to a known kernel bug regarding suid binaries, so it's very unlikely that you need a special option for that. I think that the current procmail snapshot has a workaround for this bug, if you can wait a day or two without upgrading the kernel, we can test Linux 2.2.14 + new procmail to see whether it fixes the problem or not. In my test system procmail is compiled to deliver to /var/spool/mail/. /var/spool/mail is a symlink to /var/mail, and /var/mail is NFS mounted from /varmail. The command cat message | procmail fails with this error procmail: Couldn't create "/var/spool/mail/bluser" if /varmail/bluser does not exist, but it succeeds if /varmail/bluser already exists. In the first case I found the following in the log file: procmail: [4900] Sat Jan 13 17:14:23 2001 procmail: Locking "/var/spool/mail/bluser.lock" procmail: Error while writing to "/var/spool/mail/_kMB+e7HY6.jump" procmail: Lock failure on "/var/spool/mail/bluser.lock" procmail: Assigning "LASTFOLDER=/var/spool/mail/bluser" procmail: Opening "/var/spool/mail/bluser" procmail: Error while writing to "/var/spool/mail/bluser" From testing@micasa.es Sat Jan 13 17:02:26 2001 Subject: The subject. Folder: **Bounced** 0 procmail: Notified comsat: "bluser@:**Bounced**" Perhaps this is related to Bug#46598, "procmail wants to create /var/spool/mail/* files"? Is this a bug in procmail or it is maybe a limitation of NFS? [ I can understand procmail having difficulties to use its root privileges to create files in the spool directory, because NFS translates root into nobody, but it could yet use its set-gid mail privileges for this, since the spool directory is group-writable by group mail ]. When procmail was compiled for the various binaries involved in the bug report, was it given a set of LOCKINGTEST directories that included an NFS mounted one, or was LOCKINGTEST set to a value *known* to be safe with NFS mounted files? It was set to LOCKINGTEST=100 so that it uses a combination of fcntl() and dot locking (which, under Linux, is supposed to be the right thing).
