Package: netbase
Version: 3.16-8
Severity: normal
I have noticed for some time now that ping -v cannot
parse incoming icmp messages (unless it was the expected reply).
eg:
[533] [lyell:bmay] ~ >ping -v master.debian.org
[...]
ping: packet too short (56 bytes) from 130.194.225.166
[...]
tcpdump can display the same packet fine:
12:29:51.843583 mobile4.csse.monash.edu.au > ALL-SYSTEMS.MCAST.NET: icmp: router advertisement lifetime 15 2: {mobile4.csse.monash.edu.au 2147483649} {mobile4.csse.monash.edu.au 2147483649} [ttl 1]
Actually, in that case, the message was entirely unrelated to
my ping to master.debian.org (perhaps ping cant tell?), but I have
also seen the same message for network unreachable errors, etc.

I can't seem to reproduce this on a current sarge or etch system. I
seem to remember being able to do so recently, but I have no
documentation to support this.
I'm going to resolve this bug sometime soon unless I hear otherwise...
