I started the game, then went looking for documentation, something came inbetween and after a while, I noticed the system load had gone up to litle over one. While investigating, it stepped up to a little over two. Top showed that X was cpu-hogging. After stopping nighthawk, the load immediately dropped back to normal. I don't know what nighthawk can do to reduce it's load on the X-server. Any suggestions will certainly be passed on. I'd suggest that the1st thing to would be to find out what ops take so much cpu on the server. i think these ops could be tracked by profiling nighthawk line by line, while xlib would be in synchronous mode. but that's all theory, and i don't really know what's doable in that sentence. don't have time to investigate either. -- Yann Dirson | Stop making M$-Bill richer & richer, alt-email: | support Debian GNU/Linux: debian-email: | more powerful, more stable ! http://www.a2points.com/homepage/3475232 | Check Acknowledgement sent to Yann Dirson <ydirson@a2points.com>:

The load comes from the X-server, not nighthawk, but I don't know enough to profile it. The magic line seems to be the "XSetClipMask" in misc.cc (about line 628). Comment that out and the CPU load plummets. Unfortunately I'm not an X windows programmer and I'm not near any reference books. Looking at "xsoldier" (another program), it looks like that programmer didn't use XSetClipMask, but used some other way of masking the pixmap. OTOH xsoldier uses up even more CPU than nighthawk, but that's probably something else. > I thought I'd try to code this, but Nighthawk has more event loops > than I can handle, and the lagging may have already been fixed in > nighthawk-2.1 (advertised in bug #27547). Nope - there isn't much that has changed internally (at least that the changelog mentions). [snip] I can't say that I noticed a difference, but I would only notice something spectacular and this K6-200 (and S3-968 video card) are fast enough to keep up normally. I'll try and remember to see how my machine at work fares (worse CPU, much worse video). I tried adding an extra XSync in the drawxpm_ani bit since that's what hurts on this machine, but no change. It looks like the virtual screen is being used (by XCopyArea at least). [looked at xsoldier a bit more] Hmmm - it looks like xsoldier initialises all the picture at the start using this piece of code: gc8 = XCreateGC(dpy,img->pixmap, 0L,NULL); gc1 = XCreateGC(dpy,img->mask, 0L,NULL); XSetGraphicsExposures(dpy, gc8, False); XSetGraphicsExposures(dpy, gc1, False); (*imgs) = (Image **)malloc(sizeof(Image*)*nsplit); for (i=0; ipixmap = XCreatePixmap(dpy,RootWindow(dpy,0),width,height,D$ XCopyArea(dpy,img->pixmap,(*imgs)[i]->pixmap,gc8,x,y,width,height,0,0); (*imgs)[i]->mask = XCreatePixmap(dpy,RootWindow(dpy,0),width,height,1); XCopyArea(dpy,img->mask, (*imgs)[i]->mask,gc1,x,y,width,height,0,0); (*imgs)[i]->maskgc = XCreateGC(dpy,WorkPixmap,0,0); XSetClipMask(dpy,(*imgs)[i]->maskgc,(*imgs)[i]->mask); (*imgs)[i]->width = width; (*imgs)[i]->height = height; } XFreeGC(dpy,gc8); XFreeGC(dpy,gc1); XFlush(dpy); I don't really have time to put alter nighthawk this radically - I'm not sure if Jason has since the version number hasn't changed (but maybe there are no bugs left ).
