Version: 1.4-p2-1
Severity: wishlist
Currently, macros dropped by the system administrator into
/usr/local/share/aclocal are ignored unless a -I option is specified
with that path. This behavior requires manual intervention when an
autogen.sh script calling aclocal expects some macros that the
sysadmin has put in /usr/local (to try to comply with the FHS).
I propose that automake's package install the directory
/usr/local/share/aclocal to facilitate local macros, and aclocal is
changed to look for macros there automatically. One way to do this is
to change line 106 of aclocal to
&scan_m4_files ($acdir, @dirlist, "/usr/local/share/aclocal");
... but there may be better ways.
In addition, an environment variable specifying dirs to search for
macros would be nice.

automake is a standard GNU tool which needs to be used by many people
on many platforms. For this reason, I won't modify automake from the
official release, except to fix bugs which are approved for upstream
release.
Generally, there shouldn't be local macros, because the package which
is built using automake must build on every OS, machine, and
platform.
Please explain why there should be local macros. If the explanation
sounds plausible, I'll forward it to the automake mailing list.

If you install a library from its source code (not a package), the
correct prefix to use is /usr/local. On my system, it so happens that
some more recent Enlightement libraries installed their macro sets
into $PREFIX/share/aclocal. These would not be usable to other
sources I build unless I modify them to specify "-I /usr/local" to
aclocal. That would be a Bad Thing -- the sources shouldn't have to
know about system-specific file layout. That's why I think that
aclocal should have a good idea of where files go and look for them in
the right places.

It is. There have been proposals to ease this kind of setup:
http://mail.gnu.org/pipermail/automake-patches/2002-May/000787.html
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/automake/2002-06/msg00097.html
but none went in yet.
Personally, I think relying on aclocal to fetch macros in third
party directories is a bad thing. A package ought to be
self-contained: since it ships built files like configure and
aclocal.m4, it must ships all the sources for these files.
Practically, this means including the `.m4' macros in a
subdirectory (say m4/) and using `ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS = -I m4'.

I tend to agree. Is there a more compelling reason to use this patch
other then to let people jam m4 macros where ever they want.=20
