Hi,
as a standalone feature this doesn't make too much sense, but merged with
#80123 (Pre-Download hooks), it does: I'd like to have a cronjob that does
apt-get -d update upgrade
each night (when phone is cheap) and I'd like apt to use
mclient/masqserver to dial out for this. Of course, I don't want that the
modem hangs up between getting the package lists and the actual packages,
so this will have to be done in one invocation of apt, with apt noticing
that the upgrade will potentially still need the modem.

Well, this bugreport isn't about the download hooks, there is another
bugreport for that (not from me, BTW).
What is the point is that APT should be able to dial up as needed (For
example, there is no point in dialing up when the files are already
cached, but a wrapper shell script cannot know this), and sometimes you
want to have multiple things done that require the net. If APT had to be
restarted in between, it would hang up the phone and dial up again a few
seconds later.

ok, i don't get it. if you are not yet connected to the net, how would
you know if the cached files (do you mean the contents of /var/cache/apt
and /var/lib/apt?) are up-to-date?
if you are using a local caching web proxy, wouldn't the web proxy be a better
thing to handle the dialing?

ok, i don't get it. if you are not yet connected to the net, how would
you know if the cached files (do you mean the contents of /var/cache/apt
and /var/lib/apt?) are up-to-date?
if you are using a local caching web proxy, wouldn't the web proxy be a better
thing to handle the dialing?

I'm thinking of /var/cache/apt here, the "Need to download 0B/x" case.
/var/lib/apt cannot be checked without going online.

So setup normal dial-on-demand instead of asking that apt becomes as bloated
as emacs.

I'm thinking of the general case that APT might have to ask for net access
first. This is true for laptops, our IDS box (which is firewalled) and
people behind dialup links. This wishlist bug asks for some smart logic in
APT to determine when network access is needed.

Network access is needed unconditionally for 'apt-get update' thus your
request to have multiple operations won't help you at all.

It will help with implementing #30505/#32919/#40438, which is a personal
itch (running a triple-boot system on a 2GB harddisk) and has some (minor)
use even on its own, so I thought I'd file a wishlist bug so the special
requirements of those three bugs get recognized if someone picks up the
"Download hooks" idea.
