I just thought I'd point out that this inconsistency has been fixed in version 4.2.3 of the jargon file, so if the debian package ever gets updated to the new version this bug could be closed. (I'm aware that upstream has dropped the info format; I think it would probably be a good idea for the debian package to generate it from the upstream master sources anyway.) You need to: (1) untar the upstream sources (2) make sure the AWK variables in Makefile and scripts point to a working awk (3) comment out the reference in Makefile to dlgen.sh [this script was omitted from upstream sources by mistake; ESR has sent me a copy but since it's only used to create a download.html page, the simplest thing is just to not call it] (4) add the following to the Makefile somewhere: infodist: jarg$(VERS).info jarg$(VERS).info: jarg$(VERS).gz makeinfo --no-split jargon.tex --output $@ (5) run "make infodist" [NB: make -n won't work because ESR has said "make" where he meant "$(MAKE)" in several places in Makefile.] This will give you a jarg423.info which is correct. However, it has nasty 'rivers' in it because makeinfo doesn't roll multiple spaces into a single space when refilling a paragraph. I think this is a bug in makeinfo, personally; we either need to fix that or put some sort of filter in to deal with this locally. [While we're filtering the input to makeinfo we could possibly make it actually put in hyperlinks for cross references to other nodes, and remove dodgy characters from node names; cf Bug 48599.] Also, since the make process writes to some of the upstream sources it would probably be sensible for a debian package to create temporary copies and run make on those, so debian/rules build; debian/rules clean; debian/rules build works properly.
