Package: svgatextmode
Version: 1.9-3
Severity: normal
I've built three new potato systems for others here recently, and could
not use svgatextmode with any of them.
The first had an 8MB ATI Xpert98 card, using the (older) Rage Pro chipset.
The second had a 16MB ATI Xpert128 card, using the Rage 128 chipset.
The third had a 32MB ATI Xpert2000 card, also using the Rage 128 chipset.
/etc/TextConfig does not seem to support any of these presently, and
available tools such as SuperProbe have been of no assistance.
Ironically, a couple of months ago, someone told me she would not switch
to Debian because it did not support her Rage 128 card, although I
believe she was speaking of X11 at that point. Recent experience has
shown me just how significant that deficit in support can be.
Where to turn now?

Hi,
SVGATextMode is no longer supported upstream (the original author has been
referring anyone with patches etc to us for at least as long as I've been
maintaining it)
If you can supply a patch for this hardware I'll gladly apply it, other
than that there is not really much I can do. (unless people want to
donate me hardware to work on it ;-)
sorry,
Ron

Ron, Lazarus,
SVGATextMode is pretty much a dead product, as far as new development goes.
In talks with Koen Gadeyne (the upstream developer) about a year and a half
ago, he was of the opinion that the vesafb device
(/usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/*) in the 2.2.x kernels would eliminate the
need for STM supporting every new card that came out. He was pretty much
right. I've been using the vesafb device on laptops and some desktops
flawlessly now, for over a year, and never have had a complaint. If you
have a newer vidcard that STM won't/can't use, try using the vesafb
device... I *THINK* it may even be compiled in the default Debian kernels
(although I don't use them, so don't quote me on that...)
