In the case of pidentd/pidentd-des, the two entries are identical, so if one were installed first, then the other (which conflicts with the first), the first package will be removed but not yet purged. If the user then performs the purge operation, the postrm of the first package will remove the ident entry. So without this feature, I've had to rely on a test to see whether the other package is currently installed, which isn't very reliable (not to mention ugly) since if a new package comes into existence (say pidentd-newencalgorithm) that fails this test, the purging problem will still exist and will be unfixable (just as is the case now since one can't expect the user to upgrade pidentd and then onto pidentd-des). -- System Information Debian Release: 2.2 Kernel Version: Linux gondor 2.2.12 #2 Sat Sep 18 12:11:40 EST 1999 i586 unknown Versions of the packages netbase depends on: ii libc6 2.1.3-8 GNU C Library: Shared libraries and Timezone data ii libwrap0 7.6-4 Wietse Venema's TCP wrappers library ii tcpd 7.6-4 Wietse Venema's TCP wrapper utilities
