Hello,

the auctex package steadfastly refuses to install when emacs19,
emacs20 or mule2 isn't there. I could not even get it installed by
overriding dependencies in dselect with 'Q'.

However, I want to use auctex with XEmacs. Contrary to what the docs
say, XEmacs does benefit from auctex: When auctex is installed and you
made auctex the default (La)TeX mode, then viewing a LaTeX document
will result in two additional menu bar entries, "Command" and "LaTeX".

AFAICT, the solution appears to be either to make auctex "or-depend"
on xemacs, or to include the auctex menus in xemacs, or to split them
out to some kind of "auctex-common" package.

BTW, I cannot install both emacs and xemacs due to lack of disc space.

Yes, that's the expected behavior.

You're not supposed to do so.

XEmacs comes with its own self-shipped AUC TeX: that's why the Debian
auctex package is not needed with XEmacs.  You just need to (require
'tex-site) in your "~/.emacs".

However, I'm unsure what version of XEmacs are you talking about.

I'm sure AUC TeX comes bundled with XEmacs 19 and 20, but actually I
don't know if the same applies to XEmacs 21.  Please, be more specific
when you report a bug.

The docs just say you don't need to install the Debian auctex package,
because you already have AUC TeX with XEmacs:

If XEmacs 21 doesn't ship AUC TeX any more, I have no problem adding
XEmacs support to the Debian package.

I will leave this bug open until I get a chance to check what's the
case.
