When I use run joe from my ICL A420G terminal, it doesn't correctly update
the screen at all times, especially when inserting and deleting lines in the
middle of the screen, or scrolling upwards (scrolling downwards usually
work). Refreshing the screen with ~R works, and gives the correct display.
This problem does not occur in other full-screen programs, such as slrn.
It used to work just fine in my old Slackware 3.5 based system.

I can confirm that bug. It even happens on a vt100 emulation. In my
case, it could be solved by re-configuring to a vt220, but the vt100
bug remains. I believe it is some terminfo problem.

This is very similar to many problems I've had with joe under
non-console situations (e.g. xterm or telnet). The following snippet
from /usr/doc/joe/README could be useful:
| Unix consoles usually do not have scrolling regions, but instead have
| insert and delete line commands. The 'fansi' entry and ones derived
| from it will work correctly. These termcap entries are provided in
| the termcap file which came with joe.
[...]
| If you use sh, ksh or bash, place this in your .profile file:
|
| JOETERM=fansi; export JOETERM
I've set JOETERM to fansi, and it solved all my problems under xterm
(e.g. arrow keys not working) and DOS/Windows telnet (e.g. screen being
garbled). If it works as well for all of you, I'd like to propose for
that setting to become permanent (either at compile-time, in
/etc/profile, or in a wrapper), or at least be suggested at install
time.

I hope this is the correct way to send in a bug report. On my
system too (in xterms), joe misbehaves when moving and copying
blocks of text. It seems this works well the first few times, and
then the screen is no longer redrawn correctly. On my old
Slackware system this did dot happen.
I follow Frederic Briere's suggestion, i.e. export JOETERM=fansi.
This seems so work; however, the HOME, END, and DELETE keys now
no longer function and I have to use CONTROL-A, CONTROL-E and
CONTROL-D. Probably the "fansi" terminfo (or termcap?) entry has
to be modified, but "locate fansi" does not return anything.
