Version: 0.14a-1
Severity: important
There is no easy way to make xmms completly leave the CD alone
so it can be ejected. An eject button might be a nice idea.
This could be an eject bug.
The symptoms are that if I put in a CD in the tiBook here
xmms recoginses it. I can add the titles to the playlist.
Now I can't savely eject the CD without removing all titles
from the playlist again. Eject will eject the CD with title
still in the playlist, but then you cannot insert the CD anymore.
The mechanism is not pulling it in again.

xmms-cdread is supposed to work on architectures other than i386.
It does work on some Sparcstations, or so I'm told.
And there's at least one person who has got a working Solaris version.
Anyhow, there's no way in which cdread could depend on which processor is
running. The motherboard might be a problem, but that's damn far-fetched.
It's more a CDROM unit hardware problem, I guess. Maybe on that
architecture, opening the CD device while it's ejected could pose a
problem.
I wonder if the CD tray can be closed if the playlist entry ('No CD in ...')
is removed _after_ it has refused to close.

Um, exactly how are these titles added to the playlist ?
With xmms-cdread, that should happen automatically.

)Hey again.. Guess this package is getting pretty popular on
)architectures other than i386 - Do you have any ideas about this, or
)perhaps I should just leave it as i386-only?
xmms-cdread is supposed to work on architectures other than i386.

Well it does work on the titanium apple powerbook ppc (also called
tibook) I have here.=20
In fact there is no direct connection of the drive to the sound
hardware, so a direct method like cdread is the only chance to play
audio on the tibook.
This also answers your question below: I am sure I am using cdread.

The internal tibook DVD-drive does not have a tray.
It just "sucks" the cd or dvd in when you insert it in the slot=20
utilising some mechanics.

I had to manuall select the /dev/cdrom device which is a symlink to=20
/dev/hdc, but I inquired further.
Actually the mechanics of the drive need about 2 seconds to pull in
the cd. After pulling it in half way it just stops,
when xmms shows: No Cd ins /dev/cdrom.
So maybe that is cdread querying for the cd and this stopps the
pulling in somehow.
If I eject being root, the drive ejects the cd fine and xmms also=20
recognises this. It is just that the queries prevent me from
cleaniny inserting another cd untill I have removed the item from
the playlist.

Yes.=20

This works.
My results were suboptimal last time, because I never say the
/dev/cdrom slot in the playlist, maybe xmms needed a restart...
because now I can see it.

This works.
My results were suboptimal last time, because I never say the
/dev/cdrom slot in the playlist, maybe xmms needed a restart...

I think you are right on target.
It probably is only the slot-loading dvd drive of the tiBook.
A slot-loading drive is also in the Apple Cube.
Right in this very moment I managed to access an external firewire drive
which has a regular tray. Now cdread works nicely with this drive,
so it has to be the slot-loading thing.
Maybe specifying a slower query interval for some devices might
be an option? You could also try and ask on the linuxppc-developers
list on how to best query the drive for a disc-change.

Changing severity of this bug to normal, because it is a very rare
problem on a very small architecture & set of hardware, does not
affect main usability of package, and a workaround exists - removing cd
item from playlist.

Tried it out our the Apple cube I have here.
Upgraded to xmms-cdread 0.14a-3.
Kernel 2.2.19-pmac.
Could not get xmms-cdread to actually read an audio CD at all.
No idea why.
syslog is flooded with device change messages
and eject also does not work until I remove the entry
from xmms.
So yes, I guess the problem still persists.
Changing the bug priority to "normal" is okay, I guess.
Thanks for asking back on this,
Bernhard

Package: xmms-cdread
Version: 0.14a-1
Severity: important
There is no easy way to make xmms completly leave the CD alone
so it can be ejected. An eject button might be a nice idea.
This could be an eject bug.
The symptoms are that if I put in a CD in the tiBook here
xmms recoginses it. I can add the titles to the playlist.
Now I can't savely eject the CD without removing all titles
from the playlist again. Eject will eject the CD with title
still in the playlist, but then you cannot insert the CD anymore.
The mechanism is not pulling it in again.
