This *may* be a bug, but is very hard to say for sure. After
upgrading emacs to -4, running gnus-5.4.11 causes a memory exhausted
error, things are fine if I continue. If nobody else is seeing this,
then it may be some thing endemic to my setup.

if it's of any use, this emacs build was done with the libc5 malloc
instead of the emacs-supplied malloc and buffer allocator, because
they no longer work (I suspect they don't completely replace the names
used by some functions in recent libc5...) Thus it may be the case
that emacs takes more space in applications using a lot of buffers,
and may be more likely to run out, I think.

The -9 package should have this fixed, as it's now using the emacs
