Xsnow doesn't seem to honor the "-nokeepsnowonscreen" option which is
supposed to keep the snow from collecting at the bottom of the screen.

I'm currently running it as:  xsnow -notrees -santa 2 -nokeepsnowonscreen

If you look at the man page, it says:

       -nokeepsnowonwindows
               Do not keep snow on top of the windows.

       -nokeepsnowonscreen
               Do not keep snow at the bottom of the screen.

As I read this, -nokeepsnowonscreen will let snow stick to windows, but it
will not pile up on the bottom of your screen, if it doesn't hit a window.
And indeed that is exactly the behavior xsnow has with this option. 

You probably want to use -nokeepsnowonwindows instead.

You're right, I misread what you said.

But -nokeepsnowonscreen does work here. I run "xsnow -notrees -santa 2
-nokeepsnowonscreen", and snow sticks to windows, but the snow that gets
through to the bottom of the screen falls off. Is this really not working on
your system? If so, perhaps you'd better provide some details like the type
of X server and window manager you are running, etc.

Or do I still misunderstand something?

You're right, I misread what you said.

But -nokeepsnowonscreen does work here. I run "xsnow -notrees -santa 2
-nokeepsnowonscreen", and snow sticks to windows, but the snow that gets
through to the bottom of the screen falls off. Is this really not working on
your system? If so, perhaps you'd better provide some details like the type
of X server and window manager you are running, etc.

Or do I still misunderstand something?

You've got it.  I'm running the xserver-P9000 accelerated driver with
fvwm2.  I have a desktop that is 8x2 screens and the snow sticks to the
bottom of all of them.

Anything else you can think of?

When I do:

$ xsnow -nokeepsnowonscreen
Xsnow-1.40, November 22nd 1995 by Rick Jansen (rick@sara.nl)

the snow doesn't stay on the bottom of my screen. That's what
you wanted wasn't it?

But anyway, that's with the old xsnow:
$ dpkg -l xsnow
ii  xsnow           1.40-1         Snow in your X server

(and, I'm only 50 km away from sara.nl, so maybe the geographical
proximity of the author has a positive influence on xsnow?)

Try starting up X with no window manager and run xsnow. The man page shows
lots of other problems were caused by the window managers.

It'd also be useful to try running xsnow -nokeepsnow and see if snow sticks
to the bottom of the screen then. (If so, it points to some problem with
your X server.)

Other than that, I'm out of ideas, and I don't maintain this package, so
I'll have to leave this bug report for posterity.

Allright...  I'm confused.  I just got a new machine and now the
"-nokeepsnowonscreen" seems to be working as advertised.  Even if I
run it from the old machine to the display on the new machine, it works
as expected.  <sigh>

Let me keep this in my Todo list and when I get the old machine connected
to a monitor again, I'll test it one more time.

I've tried xsnow from both hamm and bo, and the results are still the same.
Xsnow only honors the "-nokeepsnowonscreen" if the "-nokeepsnowonwindows" is
also specified.

it's me again, the nerving Debian maintainer.  I just forgot to
include the two bugreports in my former mail.  Here they are:

   Xsnow doesn't seem to honor the "-nokeepsnowonscreen" option which is
   supposed to keep the snow from collecting at the bottom of the screen.

   xsnow from time to time clears the snow off the bottom of the screen and the
   tops of the windows.  However, when it clears it doesn't reset its idea of
   the current top-of-snow levels and thus the point at which to begin
   "streaking" snow downward instead of floating it (a very strange effect).

   I'm using the X packages v3.3-4, fvwm2 2.0.45-BETA-4, and running xearth
   1.0-12 on the background (which is a really cool effect).

Please investigate these bugs independend of the copyright question.

it's me again, the nerving Debian maintainer.  I just forgot to

   I'm currently running it as:  xsnow -notrees -santa 2 -nokeepsnowonscreen

   I've tried xsnow from both hamm and bo, and the results are still the same.
   Xsnow only honors the "-nokeepsnowonscreen" if the "-nokeepsnowonwindows" is
   also specified.

And here is the second #13269 whose full report may be found at

   xsnow from time to time clears the snow off the bottom of the screen and the
   tops of the windows.  However, when it clears it doesn't reset its idea of
   the current top-of-snow levels and thus the point at which to begin
   "streaking" snow downward instead of floating it (a very strange effect).

   I'm using the X packages v3.3-4, fvwm2 2.0.45-BETA-4, and running xearth
   1.0-12 on the background (which is a really cool effect).

Please investigate these bugs independend of the copyright question.
