X
XHow about looking at /usr/doc/debian- where currently
Xstands at 0.93, contains old files, belongs to the base package and will
Xprobably be updated by Bruce on our way to 1.1.
X
XThe problem is a sharp definition of a version number. That collides with our
Xin-vitro per-package upgradability, so we might want to settle for a "soft"
Xdefinition of a version number.

We have /etc/debian_version, but I don't know if this is updated
when base packages are updated.
However, I think it should be stated as:
* The version of the Debian system you initially installed,
or completely upgraded to, and if you have updated anything
since that.

Subject: Debian version in bug reports
/etc/debian_version is updated when the base-files package is upgraded.
I think the existence of the "bug" package fixes this bug in a way. That is,
if we tell people to use "bug" if they're unsure about which version numbers
to include in the report, it isn't very important to have a debian_version
in the bug report. Otherwise, I think /etc/debian_version is as good a
version number as we can get if we only want one number.
