I suppose the problem is in the sound driver, since I previously had this problem in linux 1.2.13, which was solved after I independently installed voxware 3.0.1 and recompiled the kernel and the sound applications. But the problem appeared again when I upgraded to Debian 1.1. I recompiled a custom kernel with the same irqs, dmas and base addresses that had worked before, but still the mixer does not work. No new hardware has been added. However this time I did not try to get an independent sound driver, since I thought it would be good if this could be fixed in the Debian distribution, to avoid re-doing everything when new updates would come.
