Here is what happens (I'm currently using Debian-1.2.17 with kernel-source-2.0.27_2): I have 2 sound boards on my PC: the GUS card and a sound card which is also a fax-modem card with voice mail capabilities. Compiling the kernel with just the GUS card (which I just tried today) makes the mixer work, but compiling the kernel with the 2 sound cards makes the mixer NOT work on the GUS card but work on the other card. However, I'd rather like to have the mixer working on the GUS card because the other card will only be used for voice mail (when I find the software ...). In Windows (...) I can have the 2 sound cards recognized and the mixer working for the GUS card. Why can't I have this in Linux ?? I send below the results of cat /dev/sndstat for both configurations (just GUS and GUS+MS Sound System). Thanks! Package: kernel-source-2.0.6
Version: 2.0.6-0

The mixer from multimedia_2.1-1 or xmix_2.1-2 packages do not
work with my GUS card (standard, not gusmax, not gus16): I
cannot control the volumes.

I suppose the problem is in the sound driver, since I previously
had this problem in linux 1.2.13, which was solved after I
independently installed voxware 3.0.1 and recompiled the kernel
and the sound applications. But the problem appeared again when
I upgraded to Debian 1.1. I recompiled a custom kernel with the
same irqs, dmas and base addresses that had worked before, but
still the mixer does not work. No new hardware has been added.
However this time I did not try to get an independent sound driver,
since I thought it would be good if this could be fixed in the
Debian distribution, to avoid re-doing everything when new updates
would come.

Hi,

This is a limitation of the mixer program and not a bug in the driver.
There is separate mixer device for each mixer chip on the system and the
mixer program can access them using /dev/mixer0, /dev/mixer1, etc. device
files. By default /dev/mixer is a symbolic link to /dev/mixer0 but it can
be changed to point to any other mixer device if required.

Best regards,

Hannu

Hello,

Thanks for your reply.
Here is what happens (I'm currently using
Debian-1.2.17 with kernel-source-2.0.27_2):

I have 2 sound boards on my PC: the GUS card and a sound card
which is also a fax-modem card with voice mail capabilities.
Compiling the kernel with just the GUS card
(which I just tried today) makes the mixer work,
but compiling the kernel with the 2 sound cards makes the mixer
NOT work on the GUS card but work on the other card. However,
I'd rather like to have the mixer working on the GUS card because
the other card will only be used for voice mail (when I find
the software ...).

In Windows (...) I can have the 2 sound cards recognized and
the mixer working for the GUS card. Why can't I have this in
Linux ??

I send below the results of cat /dev/sndstat for both
configurations (just GUS and GUS+MS Sound System).

Thanks!
Marcia
