So I _think_ that upgrading smail somehow killed cron, or caused it to die. I restarted cron and it's running now with no problems so far. I have had a history of problems with the cron process dying unexpectedly on my machine, but this hasn't happened in at least 3 weeks until today. -- System Information Debian Release: 1.2 Kernel Version: Linux kite 2.0.27 #2 Sun Dec 1 17:33:35 EST 1996 i586 Versions of the packages smail depends on: libc5 Version: 5.4.13-1 libgdbm1 Version: 1.7.3-11 cron Version: 3.0pl1-36 --- Begin /etc/smail/crontab (modified conffile) 3,23,43 * * * * runq --- End /etc/smail/crontab Information forwarded to debian-bugs-dist@lists.debian.org, Soenke Lange <soenke@escher.north.de>:

I doubt that it's a re-occouring problem of yours - definately a bug. I havent had that problem as far as I can recall, but it also died when I upgraded. In fact, I only noticed 5 minutes before your email that cron had died (I upgraded 24 hours ago). I tested this on several machines now ... and the crond-error didn't occurre. Please tell me your further investigation, to make a stabel version of smail availible in rex.
