Subject: smail: upgrading smail killed cron
Package: smail
Version: 3.2-3
The last entries I see in my /var/log/cron.log are:
Dec 4 14:23:00 kite /USR/SBIN/CRON[23754]: (mail) CMD (runq)
Dec 4 14:24:00 kite /USR/SBIN/CRON[23788]: (root) CMD (atrun -d -l 0.5)
Dec 4 14:25:00 kite /USR/SBIN/CRON[23817]: (root) CMD (atrun -d -l 0.5)
Dec 4 14:26:00 kite /USR/SBIN/CRON[23833]: (root) CMD (atrun -d -l 0.5)
Dec 4 14:27:00 kite /USR/SBIN/CRON[24181]: (root) CMD (atrun -d -l 0.5)
Dec 4 14:28:00 kite /USR/SBIN/CRON[24188]: (root) CMD (atrun -d -l 0.5)
Dec 4 14:29:00 kite /USR/SBIN/CRON[24207]: (root) CMD (atrun -d -l 0.5)
Dec 4 14:30:00 kite /USR/SBIN/CRON[24501]: (root) CMD (atrun -d -l 0.5)
Dec 4 14:30:04 kite crontab[24516]: (root) DELETE (mail)
Dec 4 14:30:27 kite crontab[24992]: (root) REPLACE (mail)
The last 2 lines were when I upgraded from smail 3.2-2 to 3.2-3. 6 hours
later, I've noticed that cron is no longer running. So I _think_ that
upgrading smail somehow killed cron, or caused it to die.
I restarted cron and it's running now with no problems so far.
I have had a history of problems with the cron process dying unexpectedly on
my machine, but this hasn't happened in at least 3 weeks until today.

I doubt that it's a re-occouring problem of yours - definately a bug. I
havent had that problem as far as I can recall, but it also died when I
upgraded. In fact, I only noticed 5 minutes before your email that cron had
died (I upgraded 24 hours ago).

...Karl

huch ...
there's no change in the crontab file of mail
history of changes of the crontab related things in smail_3.2
-2
changed debian.rules to compress all files under /usr/doc/smail
i.e. /usr/doc/smail/examples/crontab to
/usr/doc/smail/examples/crontab.gz which break crontab to be
installed
-3
changed debian.postinst:
zcat /usr/doc/smail/examples/crontab.gz > /etc/smail/crontab
the call to crontab wasn't changed.
no more changes in crontab ... so I doubt, that the problem comes from
smail installation?
I tested this on several machines now ... and the crond-error
didn't occurre.
Please tell me your further investigation, to make a stabel version of
smail availible in rex.
Thanx
Soenke
