Expected behavior: The config program should do a check to ensure that numeric ranges are at least numeric ranges and within some reasonable set. This would catch most of the typos. Procedure to reproduce: Change the VertRefresh to 2--50 in the X config file. This will introduce a syntax error that causes the X server to fail. If you run something else that grabs the device and locks it, the problem is with the something else, not with X.
