I have a bo system with a few hamm packages installed (I hope that isn't
the cause of the problem).

When XEmacs starts up it reports 

    Cannot open doc string file \
	"/usr/lib/xemacs-19.15/i386-debian-linux/DOC-19.15p4-XEmacs"

That file on my system is actually named DOC-19.15p4-XEmacs.xemacs19.

Also, some of the man symlinks in /etc/alternatives are broken:

    b2m.1.gz		man page doesn't exist
    emacsclient.1.gz	man page doesn't exist
    rcs-checkin.1.gz	man page doesn't exist
    xemacs.1.gz		points to rcs-checkin(1)
