Hi!
About info 3.1-6:
1-
Arrow keys don't work.
2-
The directory /usr/local/info is not in the default (hard-wired)
INFOPATH. I had to set it to /usr/info:/usr/local/info in the
shell initialization script.
Good luck.

The standalone info browser in texinfo 3.1 contains code (in
terminal.c) to try to find out what the termcap database claims that
arrow keys generate.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to use anywhere the variables where it
stores the answers !
Observed symptoms are that the arrow keys beep and generally do odd
things, rather than working as expected. (I'm using an xterm.)
This bug was originally reported as Debian GNU/Linux bug#889; when you
reply, please keep the start of the subject line intact and send a

In May I reported the bug below. This is still not fixed in Texinfo
3.6, and I've just had another user report this as a bug in the Debian
package. Is there likely to be any progress soon ?
When you reply, please preserve the Subject line and send copies to
debian-bugs, Emilio Lopes and Michael Deisher, as I have done.
Thanks.

X
XIn May I reported the bug below. This is still not fixed in Texinfo
X3.6, and I've just had another user report this as a bug in the Debian
Xpackage. Is there likely to be any progress soon ?
X
XWhen you reply, please preserve the Subject line and send copies to
Xdebian-bugs, Emilio Lopes and Michael Deisher, as I have done.
XThanks.

XSubject: Re: Bug#889: `info' in texinfo 3.1 doesn't understand arrow keys
X
XThe standalone info browser in texinfo 3.1 contains code (in
Xterminal.c) to try to find out what the termcap database claims that
Xarrow keys generate.
X
XUnfortunately it doesn't seem to use anywhere the variables where it
Xstores the answers !
X
XObserved symptoms are that the arrow keys beep and generally do odd
Xthings, rather than working as expected. (I'm using an xterm.)
X
XThis bug was originally reported as Debian GNU/Linux bug#889; when you
Xreply, please keep the start of the subject line intact and send a
Xcopy both to Emilio Lopes and to debian-bugs. Thank you.

Mark Baker tells me that Lasermoon (the people who did Linux FT) have
a version with fixed arrow keys. The diff he generated from their
sources is below.
It seems that they forgot to add the copyright and change notice
statement by the GPL. We should probably note that parts are
Copyright Lasermoon Ltd, Wickham, Hants, England;
Copyright, 1994, 1995 Unifix Software GmbH, Braunschweig, Germany;
and that they have modified the code.
Ian.

Here's a better patch, as promised.
The code I didn't at first understand was where they had put some low level
IO in for the keyboard instead of using getc(). This they had done because the
buffering stopped it from working well with select(), but it caused a number
of other problems. I've gone back to getc() but turned off buffering with
setvbuf().
The one problem remaining with this that I know of is that you can't use
cursor keys immediately after an isearch. Because escape is the cancel
isearch key, it won't put it back when it receives it during an isearch, and
escape is of course what cursor keys are prefixed with. I can't think of a
good way round this apart from changing the key, which would not be a good
idea.
