White" , debian-testing@lists.debian.org, Heikki Vatiainen , Sven Rudolph Subject: *--* XFree86 3.3-2 testing successes and failures Message-Id: I have had many different unsuccessful paths through the X installation. In each case they were the result of poor choices in the configuration phase. My normal test machine (a 486 with a Trident video card) was well known, so I had no problems making the correct replies to card information. The P75 I did this testing on (my normal development machine) has a Cirrus Logic 54xx video card for which there are 4 possible choices in the card list. Incorrect choices result in clock lines that shouldn't be there and mode lines that the server can't validate, yielding the "screen flashing syndrome". Once the correct card choice was made (543x) this problems disolved. I had one other problem that might be associated with the packages or might be a dpkg problem. First some background. While cycling between dselect and xdm, trying different configurations, removing the packages (with --purge from dselect), reinstalling and configuring, I eventually got into a state where purging the package didn't remove XF86config. At that point I realised I was wasting time with package removal and installation and began simply removing the config file and running xbase-configure. I have seen this behaviour (leaving config file after purge) while testing the old version of X and simply assumed I was doing something wrong. More careful investigation indicates that the effect is real. Next time I test from a scratch install, I'll see how many cycles it takes for the failure to occur. (Not that that will tell me much, but it might help someone else's understanding of the problem) In any case, I don't see this as a problem with xbase, and users aren't likely to cycle like this during an installation attempt in any case. Second problem involves server configuration. During the normal installation you typically get offered the vga16 server as the default first. Answering yes is correct for configuration which is asked next. After the configuration phase the other server you chose (the svga server in my case) is offered for the default. The correct answer here is yes and this should be enough to get X started. When you build the configuration from xbase-configure the vga16 server is left in the the Xservers file and it will not work with the new configuration file. Xdm starts the server ok, but nothing happens after the screen clears to grey. Correcting the server line in the Xservers file makes everything work. I need to do some more testing on this second problem to see if it happens during a "normal" installation. In conclusion, the only "real" problem that blocks the installation of the new X packages is the lack of /dev/tty0 on the base system. Sven, can we fix this for the next disk set? I would have done more testing last night, but it was my birthday and I got forced to party instead ;-) Thanks to everyone who helped lead me through the installation problems.
