I had difficulty figuring out the format of the first argument to
gethostbyaddr. I looked at the man page, the info for libc, and
/usr/include/netdb.h.
I tried test programs with the address represented using struct
sockaddr_in (from gethostbyname), using standard dots and digits, and
of course using the struct in_addr (int) format [this turns out to be
the correct format -- though I didn't notice this at first because of
a bug in my test program].
I think this should more clearly documented.

Hi..
I'm the new Debian maintainer for the manpages packages. I'll send
patches for the bugs I solve. I'll also forward some bugs found by Debian
users (the ones I can't easily solve).=20
Like this:

gethostbyaddr(3) says:
struct hostent *gethostbyaddr(const char *addr, int len, int type);
It's there any reason for not changing `const char' to the right type?

If I still were maintainer of the man-pages package I would complain
that this probably automated message does not tell me anything about
the problem involved or how to find out what the problem might be.
I conjecture that the number 2387 can be used, but it would have
been much nicer for the recipient if a url was given.
However, I am not the current maintainer, and mail about the
man-pages package should be sent to mtk-manpages@gmx.net.

That the bug is still present shows a weakness in the Debian bug handling system.
Formalities are handled, but no actual work is done. Did anyone read the report?
Read the report. It is from 1997. It says two things:
(i) why is the prototype what it is?
(ii) please document the use of the first argument.
Part (i) is not to be addressed by the manpage maintainer.
The prototype is given by POSIX, or given by glibc, but certainly not
determined by the manpage author. He just documents.
Part (ii) very much is the job of the manpage maintainer.
And he did his job - details have been added, the current text
is much more precise than that of 1997.
So, there is nothing to do.
Andries

Subject: gethostbyaddr(3) ill documented
Package: libc5-dev
Version: 5.2.18-1
I had difficulty figuring out the format of the first argument to
gethostbyaddr. I looked at the man page, the info for libc, and
/usr/include/netdb.h.
I tried test programs with the address represented using struct
sockaddr_in (from gethostbyname), using standard dots and digits, and
of course using the struct in_addr (int) format [this turns out to be
the correct format -- though I didn't notice this at first because of
a bug in my test program].
I think this should more clearly documented.

(libc6 and manpages have both updated this to a void*).
