The gzip 1.2.4 executable on my HP-UX workstation deals with it slightly better than the Debian version by reporting that there's an incomplete literal tree, which is a gzip format violation. Since the archive is corrupt, the only real issue here is that we seg fault instead of being more graceful about failing. Since the same source compiled on HP-UX is indeed more graceful, I suspect this is really a libc issue or something like that... regardless, I don't think it's worth pursuing.
