Isn't there an xdm-shadow binary you have to use if you are running 3.2, which is included. OK, but: - there should be just one binary that works with both shadow and non-shadow passwords (actually, xdm-shadow should work just fine with non-shadow passwords, except for producing harmless "getspnam failed, are you root?" debug messages). I suggested this to the upstream maintainers, but I guess it was too late before the final release... - we need shadow support for Debian 1.2, so if we really don't want to upgrade to XFree3.2 right now, then the old version should be patched (it might be a good idea to fix the libXt buffer overrun at the same time, if we're going to recompile the whole X source tree anyway). I suggested this to the > upstream maintainers, but I guess it was too late before the final > release... Hmm. I'm reluctant to change the xdm source/Imakefile at the moment - I want to make as few changes as possible. I don't have very much time for edit/recompile cycles before next week. > - we need shadow support for Debian 1.2, so if we really don't > want to upgrade to XFree3.2 right now, then the old version > should be patched (it might be a good idea to fix the libXt > buffer overrun at the same time, if we're going to recompile > the whole X source tree anyway). I will compile and release another set of X packages tonight. These fix some of the trivial problems with XFree86-3.2-0 (i.e. the I128 server is provided, xlib6-dev provides xdevel, and the source package has been renamed to xfree86-3.2 to avoid upsetting dpkg-source). I'd like as many people as possible to test these so that simple problems can be fixed. Then we can decide whether or not to include version 3.2 in rex. I suggested this to the Note: what I said here only applies to 3.2. xdm-shadow in 3.1.2 won't work with non-shadow passwords unless a few changes are made to make the code look like in 3.2 (use the non-shadow password if getspnam() returns NULL). But these are really minor changes. > Hmm. I'm reluctant to change the xdm source/Imakefile at the moment - The changes in 3.2 are very small (note - I haven't tried to compile it, only looked at the sources, so correct me if I missed something): - remove the "getspnam() failed, are you root?" debug message in xdm/greeter/verify.c - #define HasShadowPasswd YES in linux.cf > like as many people as possible to test these so that simple problems > can be fixed. Then we can decide whether or not to include version 3.2 > in rex. Good that there is some hope. I'm going to install and test it, once it reaches the local Debian mirror (it may take a few days).
