From: Vincent Renardias

Message-ID:
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII
Package: compress-package, ncompress
Version: 1.3-1, 4.2.4-2
Those 2 packages seem to provide the 'compress' program.
Maybe we could consider droping one of these packages (or merging them).
NB1: compress-package is orphaned.
NB2: interestingly enough, compress-package is in section "contrib",
while "ncompress" is in "non-free".

compress-package is just an installer, similiar to the netscape

Hmm. I *think* compress-package is simply a package that automates building
a compress binary. (Like kernel-package does for the kernel.) Don't know
about ncompress, though. But then I use neither, so I could be wrong.

The xfnt* packages need it to build, and the uucp packages need it as
not everybody uses gzip. (I'm pretty sure that the next version of
XFree, now in binary-only beta test, can use gzipped fonts.)

Yup, it will. The next release should be very soon, but not until 1.3.
