Subject: APM kernel problems on HP 4000C laptop
The 2.0.27 kernel, when compiled with APM BIOS support enabled, causes
processes to randomly lose on a HP Omnibook 4000CT laptop.
The APM settings in the kernel configuration are as follows:
[*] Advanced Power Management BIOS support
[ ] Ignore USER SUSPEND
[ ] Enable PM at boot time
[*] Make CPU Idle calls when idle
[*] Enable console blanking using APM
[*] Power off on shutdown
Booting this kernel consistently produces a kernel "oops" in the log
as follows. (I booted this kernel twice and got *exactly* the same
message each time).
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address c0000eb0

I would suggest that you try the 2.1.17 kernel. I had some trouble
with 2.0.27 on my laptop, and upgrading fixed it. Note that this
upgrade can be a little tricky if you're using pcmcia. You'll have to
recompile the kernel, and the pcmcia-source.

Subject: Re: APM kernel problems on HP 4000C laptop
I have since given my HP Omnibook 4000 to my sister and replaced it with
an Omnibook 5500CT. It seems somewhat better behaved, but I still have
occasional problems. Usually, but not always, after I've invoked the
APM suspend function.
Once in a while I'll see the kernel message
free_one_pmd: bad directory entry 00400000
and at that point the kernel becomes completely unusable; any attempt
to execute a command results in an immediate segmentation fault. A
reboot is required to get things going again. This afternoon this happened
during the reboot fsck, which made things pretty dicey. Eventually I was
able to nurse it through the fsck and get things going again.

By the way, all this work with the 5500CT has been with 2.0.30.

This seems to have been a hardware problem. Last week I exchanged my
HP5500CT, first for a loaner machine and then for a brand new one,
keeping the old hard drive each time. The problem has not recurred
since.
The problem seemed to be both intermittent and temperature-related.
Recently I had been running Rocke Verser's DES Challenge code on this
machine. This may have overstressed it thermally. Like most laptops,
this one has no fan to keep it cool, and like all CMOS CPUs the P133
draws more power when running than when halted.
